Lunch #58: Tropics

Tropics Armed with intelligence from an MSG150 fan (we have little of our own) we took a route today that passed under the HCG and past the former home of Blue & Pink. Blue & Pink has been closed for a month or so but today there was a new banner over the door, "Henry's Bento". Since we were meeting Erin today at Tropics we decided to stay on plan and then double back on the next MSG150 outing to get Henry's Bento. Hopefully it will still be in business. Tropics is one of only a few Thai restaurants in the DLZ and always draws a big lunch crowd. Today was no exception.

There's nothing tropical about Tropics, except that they serve Thai food, which I guess is kind of Tropical. I've been here many times, as it is one of two places in the ID that serve Thai food. They always have a good sized crowd. We were seated quickly at the big table and promptly ignored for a long time.

Sooner or later we got our server's attention and placed our order. I usually go for the Green Curry Chicken lunch special but we went family style this time. Everything was tasty and fresh. The noodles were in a tasty sauce, while the prawns and veggies were nicely seasoned. On the other hand, they gave us a ridiculously small serving size for the price. It felt like a kids meal or something. I heard food was getting expensive so maybe they're trying to shrink the portion sizes to compensate. It wouldn't have been a big deal if I hadn't been STARVING 3 hours later and had to attack the creepy leftovers in our office fridge.

Anyhow, good food, and definitely better than their Thai competition in the food court, but small portions and slow service yield it a crappy score.

Geary's Review

Tropics was bustling when we arrived, but one of the large tables in the back was still open. We were seated quickly, but the staff seemed overwhelmed and it took a while to get menus and then even more time to place our order. There was heavy take-out traffic, which seemed to be clogging up their flow. We decided to go with family style so I ordered one of the specials form the white-board, Spicy Noodle (pan fried wide rice noodles with egg, broccoli, onions, mushrooms, bell peppers, basil, chicken, and prawns).

The food took a while to arrive, but once it started to come it arrived in a pretty steady stream. The Spicy Noodle was one of the first dishes out. It was good: tender chicken and shrimp, fresh still crisp vegetables, and a rich, tangy sauce over wide rice noodles. The dishes that came with a side of white rice seemed to be a bit skimpy on the dish part, but everything was cooked and prepared well with fresh ingredients. There was a bit of sameness to all of the sauces and nothing really stood out. If you're in the mood for Thai and in the ID, there is no better spot.

The food alone rates a 3.5 chopsticks for me, but when forced to round to a whole number the slow service takes it down to a solid 3 chopsticks.

Thai Food! Huzzah! I haven't had thai food in a while, so I'm pumped. Rob wasn't with us, so we were able to have a meat-eating family-style lunch. We got a pretty good array of dishes... but had to wait with bated breath for 15 minutes for our food to arrive (after waiting 18 minutes to get our order taken). An aside: in general, the service was a bit disorganized.

Of all the different dishes we had, I have to say that the Lunch Special Spicy Noodle was the best. All of the dishes (except the Phad Thai, and House Noodles) tasted almost identical; I honestly couldn't taste the difference between them. They're all decently good.

The meat selections seem to be somewhat ignored. I think our Phad Thai with Pork actually came out with tofu. Also, each dish had a different spice level... which was completely ignored. When each dish was brought out, they actually quoted the wrong spice level. The spice level that we asked for didn't really matter anyways, because everything came out weakly spiced (approx 1-star).

If you're looking for Thai Food, the International District isn't the best place. But if you're hankering for Thai and you're in the ID... this is definitely a reasonable option.

Tropics is definitely a lunch time hot spot. When I arrived I saw the main group had gotten a large table, but otherwise the place was packed and I would have had to wait for a table. We waited for a while before someone brought water, and then we had to ask for menus. Maybe the server thought we had already ordered. We waited for someone to take our order.

Once someone came to take our order, most of us decided to share the dishes family style. Most dishes were ordered 3 to 5 stars hot. The food did not take long to arrive. Quite a few of the dishes looked the same. There was a house special noodle, fried noodles in a broth, served in a bowl. I had tastes of several things. My favorite was the Priking (sp?) Prawns. They were prawns stir-fried with green beans in a spicy sauce. The other dishes I preferred were the Cashew Chicken and the house special noodle. Although the dishes were ordered spicy, I did not find them very spicy. I would have rated most of the heat at about 2 stars. Also, the portions were small, even for lunch, and a few even looked a little lost on the large white plates.

Overall, the food was tasty and fresh, but with small portions. Service was slow and brief. This is a good place for quick lunch Thai, but not special enough for more than a three chopstick rating. Go early or late, but not right at noon.

Honestly, I did not expect much from this place for being the only Thai place in Chinatown. Okay, there might be one other… might be in the Uwajimaya food court or something. But when I think of Thai food in Seattle I think of the Ave and then maybe Broadway. But I’ll give it a chance. I was definitely more optimistic than when we went to Fortuna!

I ordered the phad kra pau. Not sure of the spelling since every place spells it differently, but it’s one of my favorite Thai dishes – stir fry vegetables with choice of meat (I like to get chicken) and basil leaves. I ordered the maximum 5 stars, because Al told me they’re conservative with their stars. Someone else ordered the same thing, but with 3 stars. When it came I couldn’t tell, which one was 3 stars and which one was 5. I notice many Thai restaurants are not so accurate with their stars.

The portions for the phad kra pau were tiny, so I was glad I decided to join in on the family style. The phad kra pau was okay. I think it lacked some of the sweetness that I like in most phad kra pau sauces. I also didn’t really taste the basil. I remember the Singapore noodles being pretty good even though it’s not my style. Other than that this place was not the greatest. Average 3 rating.

My favorite Thai restaurants for phad kra pau are Best Thai & Pho in Renton and Little Thai on the Ave.

Lunch #38: Thai Place

Thai Place There were times when I thought this day would never come. Today MSG150 completes its tour of the Uwajimaya Food Court. The Thai Place marks the 10th and final lunch spot. We hit two during our first pass along the western side in January and then the final eight during this three week stint. The Thai Place is one of the first places you see when you enter the UFC from the NW corner. When not busy, the Thai Place ladies call out like food court sirens trying to snare passers by into stopping for lunch. Up until this point, we have resisted their calls, but today we headed in.

Geary's Review

First, "Thai Place"? Is that really the best they could come up with? Maybe they were going for Thai Palace but ran out of a's. It's certainly better than Thai Palce or Thi Palace.

There are two ways to get lunch out of the Thai Place: the steam table or the cook to order menu. I went with the steam table and chose the "2 Choices" option with Red Curry Chicken and Prikking Prince Chicken. In addition to my two choices, I also got a scoop of Phad Thai, a scoop of rice, and a small spring roll. The friendly woman serving me even offered to ladle some of the curry sauce onto my rice and of course I accepted her offer.

The Prikking Prince Chicken is chicken with green beans, red peppers and a chili pepper sauce. It had a nice flavor and the veggies were only slightly overcooked. The curry and Phad Thai were passable. Loading on the a bunch of the provided hot sauces helped the whole meal. The spring roll was soggy. In all a reasonable meal, but nothing to go out of your way for.

I was warned several times to not order something from Thai Place's steam table. But, I'm impatient and the food looked decent through the glass baricade... so I went with the "2 entree combo.".

The lunch combo with with your choice of flavorless Pad Thai, Flavorless fried rice, Flavorless white rice, or a flavorless combo. I opted for the flavorless pad thai.

Entree #1: Orange Chicken. I'm pretty sure they just ran over to Safeway, and ordered some of their General Tsao's chicken... threw a little extra sauce on it, and called it a day. Bleh. Entree #2: Garlic chicken. See review for entree #1. Overall, the food was crap.

Talk about ending with a bang. Thai Place has buffet food and a smattering of menu dishes. I went with the Prikking Prince Chicken, side of rice and Pad Thai.

Looking back at the photo that Geary took of my meal, I almost want to vomit all over my laptop. But in fact, as I was eating it, it wasn't half bad. It just wasn't good. I don't think I've been to a good Thai restaurant in Seattle. They all serve the same bullshit. Anyway.

To drink, I harnessed the power of Aquarius!. This makes me want to burn my draft papers and drop acid in Central Park. Or maybe it's the fact that I've just ate at Uwajimaya NINE TIMES that makes me want to get blotto. Big surprise - Aquarius is made by Coca Cola. And it's refreshing! Kind of like Pocari Sweat.

For dessert - Rice Cake Chocolate Pies. Unfortunately these were a miss. The packaging was some of the nicest packaging I've ever seen in any container, ever. But unfortunately they don't deliver. They taste like chocolate flavored cardboard surrounding tasteless rice chew toys.

Thai Place is usually where I end up when forced to dine in the UFC. The key is to order off the menu -- it takes a little longer than picking from the (mostly non-vegetarian) pre-made items, but you get a freshly cooked lunch. Today's Pud Kee Mao was tasty and had a good spicy kick to it, but too many of the wide noodles were stuck together. They also went a little overboard on the basil. I do like the flavor that basil adds, and an individual leaf gives a nice little zing to a forkful of food, but a whole sprig of basil with half a dozen leaves all connected with a thick stem is too much for me to consume all in one go. There were quite a few of those in the Pud Kee Mao, but they were easy to work around. Overall, it's a three chopstick meal -- it's good, but has some flaws.

Lunch #37: Noodle Zen

Disappointing. Thats the best word I can use to describe this place.

The chicken wasn't bad. The noodles and the sauce weren't good though. The sauce was too sweet, and I was disappointed in the amount of pepper involved in their Pepper Sauce. The noodles were bland.

When in the UFC don't feel bad to skip this place. I rank it only slightly above Uwajimaya's chef Kenzo.

Garbage. Noodle Zen looks good on the outside - you pick your noodle, your sauce, and your meat. Then they ladle a spoonful of butter all over it. A little hot sauce - gonna be good right? It's NOT. The noodles weren't good, the sauce wasn't good, the meat wasn't good.

At least I had something good to drink. This time I got a Kirin Gogo-no-kocha Tea. It makes me want to stand on the beach and yell "HA" for no reason. Or, with a great power, float up to the sky and scream "Lu la la, We'll ride on the winds of the universe!" It was good, I recommend it.

For dessert I got Dark Choco French Cookies. These little suckers were tasty. Unlike Oreos, they were thin, and big like a coaster.

Back to Noodle Zen: There is no reason to ever come to this restaurant.

Noodle Zen takes a building-block approach to lunch. Build your own lunch by picking from three noodles, three sauces, and five "meats". This gives something like 750 lunch options. My math may be off, but it's way too many to comprehend, so I went with one of the 4 fixed options, Thai Beef Noodle. As it turns out it was essentially Pho.

Exiting world of noodles The receipt declares that Noodle Zen is "The exiting (sic) world of noodles." Clearly a typo, but I'm not sure it would make any more sense if they had gotten it right. Exciting world of noodles? Really? Is there any world in which noodles could be called exciting? Yummy maybe, but exciting seems like a stretch.

As for the food, the broth was nice and sweet and beef was reasonably tender. I have had much better Pho, but it was certainly a passable lunch.

Noodle Zen is one of my reuglar lunch spots at the Court. I'm a big fan of the big green vegie noodles all fried up with ginger sauce. They prepare it right in front of you on a big flat grill. It takes about 3 minutes and there will be no question of freshness. There are no heat lamps here. Sizzling hot beef or chicken. Some vegies and the fresh fat green noodles.

I see that my fellow lunchers are not as big a fan of the NZ as I am. They are but n00bs. You can tell because not one of them ordered the juicy green noodles. Typical N00b mistake. Ignore their low ratings and go to the Noodle Zen and have good a good lunch of warmth and freshness. Share your lunch with a friend for it is big and of great value.

Rob's Review

In theory, Noodle Zen seems pretty good: you get your choice of noodles, you add your choice of sauce, and you add your choice of meat (or tofu, in my case). Every time I hear someone mention this place, I think of this theoretical noodle dish and nod appreciatively, but the few times I've been there (today included), the whole ends up being less than the sum of the parts. Today's dish was a bit better than other days because I added a good helping of hot sauce, but the noodles had a sweet tang to them (was the pepper sauce made from sweet peppers?), which I didn't really like. The veggies were mostly flavorless. The thin wedges of tofu with mushrooms were pretty good. Unfortunately, there's no attempt made at meshing these three main ingredients together -- they're just heaped one atop the other. So, if you're in the mood for some assembly line noodles, head to Noodle Zen. If you're in the mood for good noodles, head somewhere else.

Noodle Zen has some potentially interesting food. You can pick your noodle, sauce and meat/not-meat. They also have a few noodle soups. I picked a Won-ton Soup (6.50), with noodles. They had some examples of the dishes by the cash register in those weird plasticy mockups. The won-tons were stuffed with shrimp & meat (chicken, I think) and it also came with thin wheat noodles and a peppery broth. There were also a couple stalks of over-cooked bok choy. The broth, other than being a little heavy on the black pepper, was thin and flavorless. The won-tons were over cooked - the noodle covering was mushy. While I liked the type of noodles used, overall the dish was bland and dull. I would not return to the food court for this. The good news is, I bought some Pocky to share with my office, and I didn’t have a heart attack walking back up the hill.
