Landmark: Uwajimaya Village, Seattle

Uwajimaya Village is a large, modern Asian grocery store plus a food court, and mini-mall in the heart of Seattle's China Town International District. (It's really more the shoulder than the heart.) Uwajimaya is a small regional chain with two other stores, one in Bellevue and one in Beaverton, Oregon, but Seattle is the flagship. It is billed as a "Village" because not only does it supply all of the staples of life, but it is all built under two to five stories of condominiums/apartments.

The selection at Uwajimaya leans to the Japanese side of the continent with every imaginable type of Hello Kitty branded food. In addition to the Hello Kitty pizza rolls, they have an amazing selection of seafood, vegetables, and other local & imported Asian foods. Their live fish, crab, and oyster displays are the largest I have ever seen.

As we ate our way through the 10 restaurants in the food court, we took time each visit to wander the aisles of the grocery store looking for interesting snacks. My favorite sections are the seafood, the hot sauces, and the snack foods. Oh, and also the vegetables and the candy. There's some neat stuff in the frozen foods section too. If you're in the area, be sure to leave some time to stop by and wander the aisles. It's a nice way to take a little Asian journey with out getting to far from home.

Uwajimaya Food Court

Uwajimaya Food Court As you may know our mission at MSG150 is to eat lunch at all of the restaurants in Seattle's International District. Last week we ate at the last of the ten lunch spots in Uwajimaya's Food Court and just for you, we have summarized them all below:

Lunch #38: Thai Place

Thai Place There were times when I thought this day would never come. Today MSG150 completes its tour of the Uwajimaya Food Court. The Thai Place marks the 10th and final lunch spot. We hit two during our first pass along the western side in January and then the final eight during this three week stint. The Thai Place is one of the first places you see when you enter the UFC from the NW corner. When not busy, the Thai Place ladies call out like food court sirens trying to snare passers by into stopping for lunch. Up until this point, we have resisted their calls, but today we headed in.

Geary's Review

First, "Thai Place"? Is that really the best they could come up with? Maybe they were going for Thai Palace but ran out of a's. It's certainly better than Thai Palce or Thi Palace.

There are two ways to get lunch out of the Thai Place: the steam table or the cook to order menu. I went with the steam table and chose the "2 Choices" option with Red Curry Chicken and Prikking Prince Chicken. In addition to my two choices, I also got a scoop of Phad Thai, a scoop of rice, and a small spring roll. The friendly woman serving me even offered to ladle some of the curry sauce onto my rice and of course I accepted her offer.

The Prikking Prince Chicken is chicken with green beans, red peppers and a chili pepper sauce. It had a nice flavor and the veggies were only slightly overcooked. The curry and Phad Thai were passable. Loading on the a bunch of the provided hot sauces helped the whole meal. The spring roll was soggy. In all a reasonable meal, but nothing to go out of your way for.

I was warned several times to not order something from Thai Place's steam table. But, I'm impatient and the food looked decent through the glass baricade... so I went with the "2 entree combo.".

The lunch combo with with your choice of flavorless Pad Thai, Flavorless fried rice, Flavorless white rice, or a flavorless combo. I opted for the flavorless pad thai.

Entree #1: Orange Chicken. I'm pretty sure they just ran over to Safeway, and ordered some of their General Tsao's chicken... threw a little extra sauce on it, and called it a day. Bleh. Entree #2: Garlic chicken. See review for entree #1. Overall, the food was crap.

Talk about ending with a bang. Thai Place has buffet food and a smattering of menu dishes. I went with the Prikking Prince Chicken, side of rice and Pad Thai.

Looking back at the photo that Geary took of my meal, I almost want to vomit all over my laptop. But in fact, as I was eating it, it wasn't half bad. It just wasn't good. I don't think I've been to a good Thai restaurant in Seattle. They all serve the same bullshit. Anyway.

To drink, I harnessed the power of Aquarius!. This makes me want to burn my draft papers and drop acid in Central Park. Or maybe it's the fact that I've just ate at Uwajimaya NINE TIMES that makes me want to get blotto. Big surprise - Aquarius is made by Coca Cola. And it's refreshing! Kind of like Pocari Sweat.

For dessert - Rice Cake Chocolate Pies. Unfortunately these were a miss. The packaging was some of the nicest packaging I've ever seen in any container, ever. But unfortunately they don't deliver. They taste like chocolate flavored cardboard surrounding tasteless rice chew toys.

I would equate the taste and texture to that of the Thai food gotten late in the afternoon at Safeway. My orange chicken was a bit cold and greasy. This meal was definitely missing the yum factor. But if you are hungry and in a hurry, it will do.

Thai Place is usually where I end up when forced to dine in the UFC. The key is to order off the menu -- it takes a little longer than picking from the (mostly non-vegetarian) pre-made items, but you get a freshly cooked lunch. Today's Pud Kee Mao was tasty and had a good spicy kick to it, but too many of the wide noodles were stuck together. They also went a little overboard on the basil. I do like the flavor that basil adds, and an individual leaf gives a nice little zing to a forkful of food, but a whole sprig of basil with half a dozen leaves all connected with a thick stem is too much for me to consume all in one go. There were quite a few of those in the Pud Kee Mao, but they were easy to work around. Overall, it's a three chopstick meal -- it's good, but has some flaws.

Lunch #37: Noodle Zen

Noodle Zen We headed out to UFC again today with the MSG150 crew back at full fighting strength. Today's conquest: Noodle Zen. Noodle Zen is a relative new comer to the food court and is apparently a local chain. We were excited to see how it stacks up.

Disappointing. Thats the best word I can use to describe this place.

The chicken wasn't bad. The noodles and the sauce weren't good though. The sauce was too sweet, and I was disappointed in the amount of pepper involved in their Pepper Sauce. The noodles were bland.

When in the UFC don't feel bad to skip this place. I rank it only slightly above Uwajimaya's chef Kenzo.

Garbage. Noodle Zen looks good on the outside - you pick your noodle, your sauce, and your meat. Then they ladle a spoonful of butter all over it. A little hot sauce - gonna be good right? It's NOT. The noodles weren't good, the sauce wasn't good, the meat wasn't good.

At least I had something good to drink. This time I got a Kirin Gogo-no-kocha Tea. It makes me want to stand on the beach and yell "HA" for no reason. Or, with a great power, float up to the sky and scream "Lu la la, We'll ride on the winds of the universe!" It was good, I recommend it.

For dessert I got Dark Choco French Cookies. These little suckers were tasty. Unlike Oreos, they were thin, and big like a coaster.

Back to Noodle Zen: There is no reason to ever come to this restaurant.

Thai Beef Noodle SoupLunch: Thai Beef Noodle Soup - $6.50

Geary's Review

Noodle Zen takes a building-block approach to lunch. Build your own lunch by picking from three noodles, three sauces, and five "meats". This gives something like 750 lunch options. My math may be off, but it's way too many to comprehend, so I went with one of the 4 fixed options, Thai Beef Noodle. As it turns out it was essentially Pho.

Exiting world of noodles The receipt declares that Noodle Zen is "The exiting (sic) world of noodles." Clearly a typo, but I'm not sure it would make any more sense if they had gotten it right. Exciting world of noodles? Really? Is there any world in which noodles could be called exciting? Yummy maybe, but exciting seems like a stretch.

As for the food, the broth was nice and sweet and beef was reasonably tender. I have had much better Pho, but it was certainly a passable lunch.

Noodle Zen is one of my reuglar lunch spots at the Court. I'm a big fan of the big green vegie noodles all fried up with ginger sauce. They prepare it right in front of you on a big flat grill. It takes about 3 minutes and there will be no question of freshness. There are no heat lamps here. Sizzling hot beef or chicken. Some vegies and the fresh fat green noodles.

I see that my fellow lunchers are not as big a fan of the NZ as I am. They are but n00bs. You can tell because not one of them ordered the juicy green noodles. Typical N00b mistake. Ignore their low ratings and go to the Noodle Zen and have good a good lunch of warmth and freshness. Share your lunch with a friend for it is big and of great value.

Yakisoba + Pepper Sauce + TofuLunch: Yakisoba + Pepper Sauce + Tofu - $6.50
Rating: 2 Chopsticks

Rob's Review

In theory, Noodle Zen seems pretty good: you get your choice of noodles, you add your choice of sauce, and you add your choice of meat (or tofu, in my case). Every time I hear someone mention this place, I think of this theoretical noodle dish and nod appreciatively, but the few times I've been there (today included), the whole ends up being less than the sum of the parts. Today's dish was a bit better than other days because I added a good helping of hot sauce, but the noodles had a sweet tang to them (was the pepper sauce made from sweet peppers?), which I didn't really like. The veggies were mostly flavorless. The thin wedges of tofu with mushrooms were pretty good. Unfortunately, there's no attempt made at meshing these three main ingredients together -- they're just heaped one atop the other. So, if you're in the mood for some assembly line noodles, head to Noodle Zen. If you're in the mood for good noodles, head somewhere else.

Luncher: Erin

Wonton Noodle SoupLunch: Wonton Noodle Soup - $6.50
Rating: 2 Chopsticks

Erin's Review

Noodle Zen has some potentially interesting food. You can pick your noodle, sauce and meat/not-meat. They also have a few noodle soups. I picked a Won-ton Soup (6.50), with noodles. They had some examples of the dishes by the cash register in those weird plasticy mockups. The won-tons were stuffed with shrimp & meat (chicken, I think) and it also came with thin wheat noodles and a peppery broth. There were also a couple stalks of over-cooked bok choy. The broth, other than being a little heavy on the black pepper, was thin and flavorless. The won-tons were over cooked - the noodle covering was mushy. While I liked the type of noodles used, overall the dish was bland and dull. I would not return to the food court for this. The good news is, I bought some Pocky to share with my office, and I didn’t have a heart attack walking back up the hill.

Lunch #36: Saigon Bistro

Saigon Bistro MSG150 was at its weakest core today as just three of us headed out, yet again, for the UFC. We are determined to get through this quickly and move back out into the wilds of the ID. Today it was Saigon Bistro's turn. We are all fans of Vietnamese food and were keen on seeing what Saigon Bistro could turn out.

Geary's Review

The man taking our order was pleasant enough, but in comparison to the other folks we have encountered in the UFC, he was an ogre. Like Shilla, Saigon Bistro has some "inside" seating along a cozy wooden bar. After placing our order, we were able to grab three seats at the bar. The bar adds some character to the Saigon Bistro that most of the spots in the UFC lack.

I went with the Bun noodles with pork. It was disappointing. The pork was very chewy and the broth seemed to have excessive MSG. The service was quick and friendly enough, but with other much better Vietnamese options in the area, it is extremely unlikely that I will ever be back.

I was thinking that I wanted something that I hadn't had before... so I went with the Chicken Mekong Style Salad.

There was plenty of chicken on the salad. The chicken was delicious and tender. The salad dressing was tangy but has been making burp all day. Where the salad really fell down was in the lettuce-- it was all cheap and boring Iceberg Lettuce.

They have Bahn Mi, but I didn't end up getting one. They're $2.50, and I'm sure they're delicious.

Decent food. Decent price. There are better places in UFC though.

Emmett's Review

Saigon Bistro looked good - I like Vietnamese food a lot for their Pho, Vermicelli, etc. Though extremely partial to Pho Bac, I'm always up for trying something new. Once you order, there's a bar area behind back where you can eat your food. We snagged three bar stools, and I was quickly served my Vermicelli.

All in all, good vermicelli. The noodles stuck together a little bit, and didn't taste as fresh as those you get at Pho Bac, but they were good. The beef was well flavored. I got a side of egg rolls for sharing, and put some in my vermicelli. Tasty.

To drink I snagged a Foco Coconut Juice, from Thailand. Coconut juice is hit or miss for me, and this was a little too sickly sweet for me. I wouldn't order it again. Note that they have the Spanish "Jugo De Coco", indicating that this Thai drink is popular amongst the latinos. It's no Coco Rico though.

For my store choice, I picked up some yogurt flavored candy named Puccho. Dear god, I can't tell you how good these things are. I went and bought 3 more flavors the next day. They're chewy like gum, but inside they have flavorful little JuJuBe type candies embedded inside the chew, along with some tangy white powder. This candy is the real deal guys, it is delicious.

Lunch #35: Aloha Plates

Aloha Plates We were not really sure what to expect as the seven of us headed for Aloha Plates, the next stop in the UFC. This would be the first real Hawaiian lunch spot in our tour. Emmett's Review

Man when I think of Hawaiian food, I think of pineapple and poi. And spam. Spam's pretty good, I must admit, but generally I get tired of Chinese food with some pineapple added. So I wasn't really looking forward to Aloha Plates. They have a nice alcove in the food court, and the workers there greeted us cheerfully.

I was in a seafood mood so I went for the Grilled Saba. It took a little longer than the rest of the food, but dang, it was pretty good. There were two large pieces of Saba, a caesar salad, some rice, and a cilantro flavored soup on the side. You don't see cuts of grilled fish on most food court menus, so this was a really nice surprise. It was a nice well rounded meal for the price. Oh and the fried banana, as you might expect, was AWESOME.

To drink I got some Hawaiian Sun Guava Nectar. Nothing special to report, other than guava is tasty.

My pick today from the store was Gummy Choco! These awesome little suckers come in a paper tube, and are fruit flavored with a chocolate coating. They come in Strawberry, Muscat, and Orange flavors. And they're pretty good too.

Kalau Pork w/ Steamed CabbageLunch: Kalau Pork w/ Steamed Cabbage - $7.25

Geary's Review

Again, another spot with efficient and friendly service. This must be a requirement for all of the non-Chef Kenzo places in here. The young woman taking orders was very helpful and the owner, busy making lunches, teased her playfully when I asked if she was the owner. They seemed to be enjoying themselves in a mutually respectful, owner/employee way, not at all like Client 9 might have teased "Kristen". After sizing up the menu I went with the seven diamond Kalua Pork with Steamed Cabbage. Although the prices here are the high end of the UFC, they are not Emperors Club VIP type prices. I was able to pay for my lunch without setting off any Patriot Act trip lines.

The pork was excellent. It was shredded like pulled pork, but with little added sauce. It was tender and full of flavor and served over a mound of steamed cabbage that complemented the pork well. The macaroni salad wasn't anything special, but didn't detract from the rest of the meal and certainly helped maintain the authenticity of the dish. Nice job Aloha.

So, if you're not getting any (Hawaiian food) at home and have the urge, Aloha is a great option and you don't have to do any sketchy money transfers, break any laws, or cross any state lines to get it.

Adam's Review

I was turned onto Hawaiian teriyaki and Hawaiian plate lunches by my dad in Spokane. Whenever I make it back to Spokane in time for lunch on a Friday, he always wants to go that place. I'm into this isht.

I went with one of the cheapest things on the menu... because (a) I wasn't too hungry, and (b) I'm cheap. Huli Huli Chicken sounded good and Hawaiian -- perfect.

What is Huli Huli Chicken? Its a chicken quarter, on a bed of cabbage with a nice light sauce poured on top. The chicken was delicious and the sauce on top softened up the cabbage below to make a nice little slaw. A nice simple lunch. I was able to avoid the skin, unlike the last fowl I had.

Good food. Decent prices. I hope you're noticing a pattern about these restaurants.

Michael's Review

This review is a bit biased: I have a frequent luncher punch card at Aloha Plates. I went into lunch *knowing* how awesome it is. In a land of food court quality Rice/Meat/Veggie combos Aloha Plates brings fresh and exciting new ingredients like Spam, hamburger patties, and fried eggs.

The lunch dollar value here is fantastic. Many of the dishes are easily big enough for two, or if you want to plump up islander style you can chow the whole thing yourself. The K&K Combo plate I order could easily feed 2. Add in the Fried Bananas and you have enough calories to feed four. I've started keeping spare K&Ks in the trunk of my car. It's going to get me through the first 4 days after the quake hits.

Fried Bananas! You get 3 bananas wrapped in a glorious high calorie coconut batter for only three dollars. No where else in the food court are you going to find fried fruit for this price. We got really lucky and ours still had the loving warmth of the deep fat fryer. It simply doesn't get any better than this.

For me Aloha Plates is one of the three gems of the Uwajimaya Food Court.

Nori Wrapped Ahi Katsu Lunch ComboLunch: Nori Wrapped Ahi Katsu Lunch Combo - $8.50
Rating: 2 Chopsticks

Rob's Review

The vegetarian menu at Aloha Plates consists of three options, the first of which is Fried Banana. I find that very amusing. I decided to forgo the second option, Curry with Baby Vegetables, and go with a fish dish, ending up with the Nori Wrapped Ahi Katsu. I'm not sure, but it might be their most expensive item, $8.50 -- a full 25 cents more than the Herb-Crusted Mahi Mahi. The ahi takes a while to prepare -- I ordered first and got my food last. The presentation was about as nice as you can get in a styrofoam container, the wasabi ginger sauce was quite tasty, and the mango salsa added a refreshing splash of color. The nori wrapped ahi katsu, though, didn't quite cut it. There was a mystery filling between the tuna and the seaweed that tasted all right, but I tried not to think about its ingredients. The tuna itself was the weakest part -- it just wasn't good enough for a sushi dish. There was one piece, in fact, that I couldn't bite in half because the tuna was too chewy. The wasabi ginger sauce saved the meal, now that I think about it. Maybe I just shouldn't have ordered fish on a Monday. Oh well.

Joey's Review

The loco moco was actually better than I was expecting. This is the 2nd time I’ve had loco moco. The other time was at Hawaiian BBQ on the Ave, which I found to be much heavier… they gave about twice as much of everything than Aloha Plates. But I liked that Aloha didn’t use such heavy gravy that would make me feel sick afterwards. My other complaint of Aloha is that they didn’t give me much rice to go with the gravy. I wouldn’t go out of my way to go back, but it was still decent.

Lunch #34: Shilla Korean BBQ

Shilla Korean BBQ Eager to move forward, the MSG150 crew headed out for our third trip to the UFC this week. We are done with the Uwajimaya Deli portion and are moving on to the private establishments along the north side of the food court. First stop, Shilla Korean BBQ. With the loss of Blue & Pink, Shilla is (I think) the only remaining Korean spot in the DLZ. There always seems to be a crowd in the UFC and today was no exception. Luckily Shilla's has a couple of its own tables and we were able to snag one for our group of five.

Geary's Review

I was very glad to be through with the Uwajimaya Deli. It was mostly better than I had expected, but still on the low end of ID lunch quality. Shilla's is the first spot on the north side of the food court. For a stall in a food court, Shilla's has done a nice job of dressing itself up. It has a tile rooflet, stone wall, and a log post. There were a couple of people in front of us, but the line moved quickly. The friendly woman behind the counter was very efficient in taking orders and passing out food.

I ordered the Spicy BBQ Pork which came with two sides of Kimchi, white rice, and a huge pile of BBQ pork. It was excellent. The best meal so far at the UFC. The pork had a nice spice to it and was well flavored. With the spicy, tangy kimchi and rice it was a great lunch.

I also tried a shorty can of pear juice. It tasted a bit like canned fruit cocktail juice with pear pulp in it. Not horrible, but not something I'd buy again. Still not enough to ruin a solid four chopstick lunch.

#6 - Country Style Lunch: #6 - Country Style "Bi Bim" Rice - $6.95
Rating: 4 Chopsticks

Emmett's Review

Shilla's advertises that all food is cooked to order, and has a large variety of Korean dishes. I'm very partial to Bibimbop, ever since falling in love with it at Blue and Pink - now closed. Blue and Pink had the Stone Bibimbop on their specials board every day, and it was literally some of the best lunch food I've ever tasted anywhere. Alas, they're gone, hence we're at Shilla's. I order the Bi Bim rice, we'll see how they do.

Their version is quite good. It comes in styrofoam, not stone pot, and the egg is scrambled, not fried, but the excellent commingling of flavors are there - there's the sauteed greens, good beef, some bean sprouts, that delicious Korean hot sauce, and a side of kimchi. The lady kicked in some Miso Soup for free, which was nice.

To drink, I got some grape flavored drink. I think it's called SacSac juice, and the web site claimes "it has a unique taste of chewing full sacs." It was sweet and tasty - and true to it's name, it had some SacSac floating in it. As you drink, you have little grapes trying to pop into your mouth. This guy writes a much more detailed review. I agree with him.

I got some "Chimes Ginger Chews" as my interesting choice from the market. They're from Indonesia, and made with Peanut Butter. I like Ginger Ale, and Ginger with my sushi, but this was just bad. Plain bad. It did not "instantly transport me to a happy place." Other people liked it though.

By the way, if anyone knows where I can get good Stone Bimbimbop in Seattle, please let us know!

#9 - Spicy Beef StewLunch: #9 - Spicy Beef Stew - $5.95
Rating: 4 Chopsticks

Adam's Review

Korean food is rare in the Internationl District, so I wasn't sure what to expect. The menu had a bunch of stuff that I was totally uninformed about, and I went with the dish that had three words that I understood in it: Spicy Beef Stew.

The soup was served piping hot. It took a good 10 minutes before it was at an edible temperature but once it cooled down, I definitely liked it. The stew was full of lots of good stuff: noodles, big bean sprouts, and some vegetables. The beef was a little sparse and not as tender as it could be... but not noticably so.

The dish also came with some sides: rice, vegetables, and kim-chi (on request). The rice was pretty sticky and easy to eat. I'm not actually sure how they cooked the vegetables, but they were really good. The kim-chi was... kim-chi: good, but still a big pile of fermented cabbage.

A good amount of food for $6. When you're ready for a change in the ID.

Japchae (sans beef)Lunch: Japchae (sans beef) - $6.95
Rating: 3 Chopsticks

Rob's Review

I stood in front of the Shilla hanging menu, going through the options one by one, looking for something vaguely vegetarian. The Kimchi Stew sounded good if they could make it without the pork. They claimed the Japchae noodle dish was a great vegetarian option without the beef. There was also some sort of ramen noodle soup. I asked about the kimchi stew, but the pork was too intrinsic to the dish, as it turned out, and so I went with the beef-less japchae. Plus another buck for a cup of miso soup. After Chef Kenzo and the steam table, it was nice to have a freshly cooked lunch. The styrofoam container I eventually received was quite heavy, and it looked like they given me a huge helping of noodles, but no, it was an almost but not quite big enough helping of noodles over a bed of rice. It came with what seemed like one piece of kimchi (the pork-less variety, I hoped) and something else that I've already forgotten. The japchae, which consisted of thin glass noodles and some vegetables, was pretty good. Two very short sections of noodle were hard, but they were small and easy to work around. It does seem a little odd to me to give both Shilla and the steam table three chopsticks, because I think I liked the Shilla UFC experience a bit better, but that's the way the fortune cookie crumbles, I guess.

Michael's Review

There is a staple lunch item around here: Rice and Meat and Vegetables. Or you can really mix things up and have Meat and Vegetables and Rice. But in the end it all starts to seem the same.

So did my Korean Beef BBQ differ from anything else I've had this month? Not so much. It was tasty Meat. With some Rice. And a bit of Veggies. And the quality was good and it was fresh and hot, but really it was the same darn thing that everyone else has too.

I was sitting there eating my RMV and thinking about what I could really say about this lunch choice that we have said about a dozen others. I couldn't come up with much. And then I looked across the food court to 'Made to Order' and started thinking about how much better the Beef Sukiyaki was. Sure its just another RMV but something about it was just so much better than this. So, 3 stars for this place, its good, but this dish isn't all that. Eat the Sukiyaki across the aisle.

Lunch #33: Uwajimaya - Steam Table

Uwajimaya - Steam Table MSG150 was back at the UFC for round three and today was the steam table. We are setting a good pace and will hopefully make it out of here before April. The steam table is the most popular of the Uwajimaya Deli portion of the UFC and we came eight strong to take it on.

Lucky Combo - Roast Duck + Mongolian BeefLunch: Lucky Combo - Roast Duck + Mongolian Beef - $6.35
Rating: 3 Chopsticks

Adam's Review

This is just like Panda Express or the Safeway Chinese food counter, except with a bigger selection and fresh better food. I ordered the Lucky Combo that came with steamed white rice and two entrees.

My First entree: Roast Duck. How could I pass it up? It's so roasty and ducky and delicious. I had the illusion that I was going to try to eat healthy (healthfully?) and peeled the skin off of my duck. Why healthy? because my last lunch was probably 10,000 kilocalories. Anyways, the skin looked so damn delicious I ate it too.

The Second entree: Mongolian Beef. Beef in sauce... how typically and deliciously Chinese. It was good. If you were wondering what the definition of a "3 chopstick" meal is, try this out. Good.

Good food. Decent price. Decent if you're in the 'Wuji' food court.

Lucky Combo - Mongolian Beef + Kung Pao ChickenLunch: Lucky Combo - Mongolian Beef + Kung Pao Chicken - $6.35
Rating: 3 Chopsticks

Emmett's Review

The steam table tempts with a broad selection of deep fried and sauteed chinese goodness. Normally I'd ignore a place like this because it reminds me too much of Panda Express. But here I am, clutching a tray, checking out the options.

The special of the day was Kung Pao Chicken - one of my faves. I coupled if with some steamed rice and Mongolian Beef. The kung pao was good. Had lots of veggies and peanuts, and was fresh. The beef was also tasty - not overly spicy, but well cooked and tasty as well. I put a little of Sriracha over the whole thing, it went down quickly.

I joined it with another weird beverage option from the supermarket. I picked this one out because of the bottle - it had mountains and shit on it. The translated label said it was cherry cider or something like that. It tasted awful - sickly sweet. I wouldn't get it again.

I followed it with some Cream Collon from Glico. The number one ingredient of Cream Collon? Shortening. They were tasty - like Combos but sweet, with a crispy cookie like outer shell, and Oreo like filling.

The price here is right, and no waiting is involved, so I could see myself coming back.

Geary's Review

The Steam Table is the only restaurant in the UFC that has a rope maze in front to keep the crowd in a nice orderly line. I was terrified. I am anti Kung Pao and General Tsao and will do anything within my power to avoid that type of American style Chinese lunch special, except when bound by rule #2. The line moved quickly and soon it was my turn to order. There is a small menu of lunch combinations that you have to choose from up front and once that choice is made, it's just a matter of pointing to what you want. I went with the Lucky Combo (rice + two entrées) and the brown rice. The number or entrée options is overwhelming. I tried to quickly size them up, but ended up just picking the first two that looked good: the Beef Chow Fun and the Jalapeño Chicken. The women working the steam table were fast and very friendly.

Both dishes were much better than I expected. I enjoyed the wide noodles of the Beef Chow Fun, but I never really figured out the Jalapeño Chicken. It was chicken stir fried with red and green bell peppers. I didn't see any Jalapeños, however the chicken must have been marinated in something with a bit of a kick. Not very Chinese, but tasty. The option of brown rice was a nice touch.

Wayne's Review

I didn’t expect a lot today, but I still wanted to find a lunch I could enjoy. I took my time to survey the vast array of choices, and ended up settling on the Mapo Tofu and Mongolian Beef. The last time I had this dish was while camping at Mount St. Helens. My Friend had brought along his wok and cooked Mapo Tofu on an antique green Coleman stove while wearing a headlamp to provide illumination. I was eager to compare this Mapo Tofu to camp ground cooking. Unfortunately, I didn’t really enjoy the dish I was served. The tofu and veggie pieces were too small and soggy. And it wasn’t particularly flavorful.

The Mongolian Beef was a different story. It looked good and tasted great as I started into it. I loved the deliciously flavorful strips of thinly sliced beef with slices of onion sticking to them. Unfortunately as I worked my way through this dish, the strips of beef became thicker, tougher and too sinewy for my liking. It’s too bad. This dish started so well but in the end I couldn’t manage to choke down the bigger pieces of beef.

Rob's Review

Although I'd passed by the Steam Table numerous times before, I'd never tried it. Mass-made Chinese? No, thank you. So it was with a little bit of reluctancy on my part to stand in line and pick out the items I would eat. But, you know, the selection wasn't bad, and they had this tray full of Onion Tofu, which sounded like it might be tasty. I got that and the mushrooms, and was pleasantly surprised to find bottles of Sriracha at the cash registers to spice up the meal. And yeah, it turned out to be not so bad. The onion tofu was indeed tasty, if a little odd -- they somehow threaded it with what I originally thought as onion, but as I kept eating it seemed more like those thin, translucent glass noodles. They gave the tofu a... unique texture. Sort of like tofu with tendons, for those vegetarians who miss their sinewy meat. Tasty, though. The mushrooms were regular old button mushrooms, and the special sauce just barely masked their bland flavor. To sum up, the onion tofu was good but odd, and the mushrooms were so-so. Seems like a three chopstick rating to me.

Jeff's Review

Compared to our various other wonderful discoveries - I really should give this place 2 chopsticks. However, it is solid deli-style Chinese which is at least as good as what you'd find at the Safeway China Express deli and better than you'd get at Panda Express in a mall. Yes,... I know those are low markers to use as reference point. However, they’re probably familiar to most people and compare directly to this meal.

I had the General Tsao Chicken, Steamed vegetables and Brown Rice for $5.95. The rice was probably the biggest let down. The greens were solid. The chicken was as you’d expect. The rice was dry and bland. Adding some sauce helped. I've eaten at this place before, I'll probably eat here again - but only for speed/convenience. In the ID, there are simply too many better choices at this price.
